Psalm Reflection: The Third Sunday of Advent

Psalm Reflection: The Third Sunday of Advent

Lord, come and save us. - Psalm 146

Why do you go to Church?

Is it because your family goes?

Or your friends?

It is because you like the community? It is the homilies?

The music?

The way it makes you feel?

This Sunday’s Psalm tells us that these reasons are simply not good enough.

The fundamental reason that we go to Mass is to worship God and confess that Jesus is our savior and we are still in need of saving each and every day. Yes, Jesus died for our sins on the cross 2000 years ago so that we could have the opportunity to be with Him for all eternity in heaven. However, that journey takes work each and every day. We need to be reminded of His sacrifice and also to be fed and nourished on our journey toward eternity.

There is no other meaningful reason to go to Mass. Everything else we receive is a bonus, but other things are ultimately unnecessary if we understand the real purpose of our worship. We show up every single week to acknowledge that we are sinners in need of a Savior.

Peter echoes this prayer when he walks on water and begins to sink; he yells “Lord, save me!” And Jesus immediately does (Mt 14:22-33). This week, acknowledge your needs, openly and honestly before God. Do not ask for the things that you want, but ask for what you really need to be more faithful and intentional. End your prayer each day with this Psalm, “Lord, come and save us,” as we anticipate Him this Christmas.

We are praying for you this week.

See you in the Eucharist.
